The Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) is a membership based non-profit making professional management organization committed to the promotion of excellence and integrity in the practice of management. The institute was established in 1954 as a premier institute that provides management consultancy and capacity building services to corporate organizations and other institutions. The KIM’s SME Solution Centre (KIM-SSC) is a strategic business unit of the Institute that was established to promote professional management practices in the SME sector.

The mission of the Centre is to promote entrepreneurship and support the creation and growth of sustainable small and medium enterprises through the enhancement of entrepreneurial and professional management practices. We do this through provision of quality training, research and consultancy services with the sole aim of assisting SMEs build their capacity for growth as they play a key role in wealth and job creation for this nation. Through our countrywide network of 22 branches, KIM is able to work with SMEs in various counties as well as partner with development agencies in projects that have a nationwide scale.

The overall goal of the centre is to enhance and promote entrepreneurship and enterprise development as a vehicle for wealth creation and economic development.

To continuously promote values and ethics in all aspects of entrepreneurship development Business Preparedness – We offer business consulting services in entrepreneurship for start-ups and entrepreneurs. We also support the start-ups in business mentorship and coaching programs to ensure these businesses grow and break-even for sustainability

Strategic & Business Planning We help entrepreneurs develop business plans for new and existing business ideas into well conceptualized and viable businesses that can attract financing or strategic partnerships.

Business Development Services We provide tailor made business solutions i.e. consultancy, business advisory and training programs for SMEs for the purposes of improving their business process and operations

Business Assessment Uses the Organizational Performance Index (OPI), a business excellence framework that enables organizations to improve operational performance and ultimately enhance business competitiveness. This leads to Company of the Year Awards (COYA) and SME of the Year Awards (SMOYA)

SME Programmes

Business Development Services (BDS) may be defined as those services and products offered to entrepreneurs at various stages of their business development journey, from business idea development all the way to growth and maturity of the business. These services are mainly aimed at skills transfer or business advice. The Centre also develops tailor made programmes based on the individual needs of clients after undertaking a comprehensive training needs assessment to determine their specific requirements and the existing gaps in management practices. The following programmes have been developed by the Institute to address specific needs of entrepreneurs and they are offered regularly.

Business Start up The course prepares participants in starting their own small business and enables them prepare business plans. The course establishes a proper foundation for the survival and growth of a start up business and enables entrepreneurs make management headways mitigating mistakes in the start- up phase

Business Expansion The course helps entrepreneurs understand and articulate their expansion needs and enables them to prepare a business plan for expansion

Business Rehabilitation The course offers an effective approach in rehabilitating ailing businesses by enabling entrepreneurs understand their problems better and prepare a counteractive plan

Business Management This programme covers a variety of management concerns relevant to small growing businesses, e.g. leadership and management, financial planning, communication teamwork etc.

Monitoring and Evaluation The programme addresses the increasing need of institutions to monitor and evaluate their small business promotion programmes and provides suitable monitoring concepts and practicable solutions

Training for Small Business Consultants The programme focuses on building and strengthening contemporary consulting and training methods for small businesses and familiarizes participants with experiential learning. The programme seeks to enhance consultancy skills among individuals and corporates, enabling them to become highly qualified consultancy practitioners

Pre-retirement Training The programme focuses on providing business and management skills to persons who have left/are preparing to leave employment and wish start their own businesses.

Conferences on Entrepreneurship Development

In order to provide a forum for the dissemination of new ideas and concepts and the sharing of experiences, KIM through CED organizes local and international conferences on Entrepreneurship Development which draws participants from the SME sector.

Research for SMEs

KIM- CED undertakes consultancy assignments related to enterprise development to meet the needs of SME clients or the needs of SME Support Organization's as may be appropriate.
